Varieties

43 entries — cultivars, mutations, crosses, and landrace selections of Coffea arabica.

A variety is a claim about inheritance: that this tree, and the seed it came from, carry a lineage that can be named. Cultivated coffee descends from a narrow genetic passage — out of Ethiopia, through Yemen, to two colonial-era populations that seeded nearly everything grown today. This index records the 43 named varieties that appear in our tracked roasters’ offerings, past and present.

Each entry keeps two records. The curated record is hand-authored — identity, parentage, and the history a name carries. The observed record is rebuilt daily from the market: which origins actually grow the variety, how it is processed, and the flavor vocabulary roasters reach for when they describe it.

Names are less stable than they look. The same population may carry different names on different sides of a border; a trade name may bundle several distinct selections; genetic work keeps redrawing lines the industry has already memorized. Where the record is uncertain, the entry says so — an unknown parent is a stated fact, not a gap.

The ledger below sorts alphabetically and filters on name, parentage, or origin. The family map that follows draws every recorded lineage edge in one plate. Both are doors: every name leads to that variety’s full entry.
